Common Ford F-250 Problems (and What to Do About Them)

Your F-250 is a classic truck, a mainstay of the 1980s and 1990s. Even though Ford replaced it after 1999 with the F-250 Super Duty, it's still what you knew it for when you bought it: a towing and hauling machine, at once capable, comfortable, and expertly equipped.

You can keep it that way, too, for decades, hundreds of thousands of miles; just stay on top of regular service. There's a few issues you might run into from time to time; here's what to look out for, and how to handle things.

Faulty Exhausts

F-250 models from between 1990 and '99 had known issues where their exhaust manifolds warped. You'll know that from hearing ticking under the hood while the engine's running. If your pickup's got anywhere from around 80,000 to 200,000 miles or so on it, it's even more likely. The solution: replacement. It'll run you anywhere from $600 to $800 on average.

Bad Sensors

There's a sensor on the front of the motor in your F-250 that feeds info about rpm to the tachometer on the dash. If that gauge's needle jumps around wildly, the transmission starts shifting rough, or you can't upshift, then, most likely, that sensor's failed. This was a known issue on models from between '90 and '96, and some with anywhere between 60,000 to 200,000 miles on their odometers these days can still have it.

Failed Gaskets

Driving an F-250 model from between '90 and 1997, one with around 87,000 miles clocked, or more? If its exhaust smells like burning, then most likely, motor oil's leaking onto the exhaust system, the fault of a leaky gasket. Replace the gasket, and you should be good to go again.

Of course, other things can go wrong with F-250 models, too. If you're not sure what's going on, let alone what to do about it, your best bet's to let the pros handle it.
